Repair It or Scrap It? A Straight Answer

Older SUV parked with the hood open, awaiting a repair-or-scrap decision

Every car reaches an age where the repair bill stops buying you a car and starts buying you a delay. Knowing where that line is can save you thousands.

The math nobody wants to do

Compare the repair against what the vehicle is actually worth today — not what you paid for it, and not what it's meant to you. When a transmission quote lands at more than the car would sell for running, you're not fixing a car; you're funding its retirement. And repairs like that rarely come one at a time on an aging vehicle.

Signs it's probably over

  • A major component — engine, transmission, or a full brake overhaul — quoted at or above the vehicle's running value.
  • Structural rust on frame rails or rockers, not just a cosmetic patch on a fender.
  • Three or more repairs in a year, each one bigger than the last.
  • Parts for the vehicle getting scarce, slow to order, or expensive.

The sentimental-car trap

We get it — plenty of cars earn their nostalgia. But a vehicle you can't drive is doing you no favours in the side yard. A car that's been sitting for more than a year is deteriorating in ways you can't see: seals dry out, brakes seize, fuel turns. The longer it sits, the less it's worth to anyone — including us.

“The car you're not driving has a value that only goes down. It never comes back.”
