How to Scrap a Car in BC Without the Runaround

BC has a reputation for paperwork, but scrapping a car here is genuinely straightforward once you know which papers matter. Here's the whole thing, start to finish.

The paperwork, in plain English

Two documents do most of the work: your vehicle registration and the ownership certificate. If both are in your name and current, you're nearly done. If the registration has lapsed or papers have gone missing, the vehicle can usually still be scrapped — it just takes a different path, which we cover in another post.

Step by step

  • Gather the registration and ownership papers, and locate both sets of keys if you have them.
  • Get a quote — by phone or through the form on this site — with an honest description of the vehicle.
  • Book a pickup window that works around your schedule.
  • Sign the transfer papers when the truck arrives, hand over the keys, and watch it load.
  • Take the plates off before we leave, and cancel any insurance still active on the vehicle.

The small things people forget

Almost every glovebox we open has something in it that shouldn't go to the shredder — sunglasses, registration slips from three owners ago, a kid's booster seat. Take five minutes the night before and empty the car completely. And check under the seats: that's where the things you'll miss tend to live.

Plates go back to your Autoplan broker. It takes two minutes and it closes the loop on the vehicle's insurance history.
